Middle East: Selling arms for peace?

Last week, during their joint visit to the Middle East, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates desperately tried to improve Washington’s leverage in the Arab world. Such efforts seem to be too little, too late. The Bush administration’s return to multilateral diplomacy in the Middle East and the simultaneous announcement of a major arm sales program are in fact blatant attempts at damage control.
